Review of Death Proof (2007) by Dann M — 08 Sep 2012
The lesser half of Grindhouse, Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof, is a messy, lackluster film that doesn't have a cohesive vision. That said, the first half of the film is excellent; Tarantino is really in his element, crafting interesting characters and captivating motifs.
But all that dies in the second half of the film, where the story shift to a new set of characters that are more irritating than interesting. Additionally, the presence of Kurt Russell's character of Stuntman Mike is so palpable in the film that his absence in the second half is felt.
And, while the climatic car chase at the end is an amazing feat of directing, the story becomes so uninteresting by that point that it's hard to get invested in it. Death Proof has an intriguing visual style and some fun characters, but is so disjointed that it's hard to enjoy.
