Review of Death of a Salesman (1985) by Joe M — 01 Oct 2007
Though I've been familiar with the story for years, I've never actually seen nor read Arthur Miller's famous play. This was a good introduction as an adaptation said to by Miller himself to be one of the best.
Malkovich and Hoffman are both fantastic and are what elevate the film to what it is, but the fact that it was made for TV bleeds through in the production design. Even looking beyond sets intentionally made with characteristics normally only found on the stage (such as missing walls between inside and outdoors) the film feels cheap, not like a filmed play as was intended.
