Review of Death Note (2017) by Matthew V — 24 Aug 2017
It's okay. While I'm familiar with the anime, I am definitely NOT a fan; I felt the anime was bloated, tedious, slow, and juvenile... the concept, however, was ripe for a film adaptation. Unfortunately, this movie adaptation suffers from the opposite and fails to develop any characters other than Light.
Ryuk might as well not be in the movie at all, and L comes across as more of a lazy deus ex machina plot device than a Sherlock Holmes level detective. It's pretty obvious that this is meant to be the first entry in a new Netflix franchise (given the sudden, obvious non-ending), so maybe they felt that they could flesh everyone out in future installments.
.. still, the movie ends up feeling like a solid 45 minutes of story and character development got left out somewhere, and that's hugely unfortunate.
