Review of Death Note (2017) by Gregory M — 01 Sep 2017
You see now the problem lies in Netflix and Netflix alone. They are this all-powerfull platform that can honestly make the most progressive, quality shows or movies but they don't want that! It's crazy if you think about it, but whatever quality work they did, they never recognized (yes I am talkiing about Sense8,yes I'll never stop being mad about that).
The thing is here they had this amazing story to tell, of good boy turning evil, the elements were all there, this could have been a really dark movie! Dark but profound while raising so many themes for discussion.
But what does Netflix prefer to do? Turn this story into a YA romance! Honestly is Netflix really aware that there are other genres out there other than YA highschool romance? I have not watched the anime, but of what I've heard it's one of the most celebrated animes there is, all dependent in the Japanese lore.
The movie is an american take on the story, completely ignoring the lore it's based on which only manages to stay on the surface of the importance of the story. I was hyped about this, cause I kinda knew the story, and now that I've seen the movie, I at least can say I'm really hyped about the anime.
This could have been a good one, but honestly it's not even good. Netflix stop it with the teen drama already!
