Review of Death Note (2017) by Taylor T — 02 Sep 2017
Truthfully, this deserves a 4 star rating but I'm giving 5 stars because A Lot of ppl are just mad it's not exactly like the anime. If you want to see the anime story, than just watch the anime again.
Now the movie review: When I saw the full trailer I thought they turned Death Note into a CW show and didn't want to watch it. But glad I did! If you never saw the anime, Light personality won't bother you at all and you will might agree w/ the guy's viewpoint. He's sort of a weakling, turn dark hero type (for now). Ruyuk is great and it's easy to see why ppl assume he would be the villain of the story.
Semi-spoliers/ Anime comparison:
Mia/Light:
If you watch the Anime, Mia in the movie is Light from the earlier episodes. The character of Light Turner doesn't actually start acting like his anime counterpart until the end of the movie. I think that's why so many anime fans hate the actor. I think they should have just turned Mia into Kira and have her kill Light or just taken her out completely. She takes too much anime Light personality and made Light Turner look like a love sick cry baby. If you watch the movie SHE WOULD MAKE A GREAT KIRA and a better adversary for L.
Pacing: I agree the pacing is not great. The worst pacing is L's intro to the world. Movie L character is really good, but I don't think ANYONE would take some guy wearing a mask (btw 16-20 yrs) seriously. It was kinda dumb. In the anime, L public persona was Watari or he would video conference (only showing the letter "L" on the screen). Only the law enforcement he worked with met him in person. Also, the creation of Kira felt rushed, but this happened fast in the anime too. I think Light killed 30 ppl and was talking about becoming a God before Ruyuk had a chance to explain the Note to him.
