While most will compare the film to the anime, Death Note the film does stand up on its own two legs - and rather well.

The film is already being hailed as another example of Hollywood white washing, and departing from the source material. Indeed, there may be a case to argue that the anime is better than this film adaptation. All of these might be fair and reasonable arguments. However, they do not detract from this film's swift simple story.

As someone who is unfamiliar with the entirety of the Death Note universe, this movie is a great entry point into the mythos. I found myself entertained and distinctly noticed the comic themes and origins - and was entertained regardless.

So insatiable was my enjoyment of the movie, I started the anime series. I do see how perhaps this could work as a series and there is a potitental for second film to follow up here to incorporate other elements from the comic and anime origins.

However, I can also see that the film seems to be effectivly streamlined and made for American audiences. There is a genuine creep factor to Ryku. Light and his girlfriend Misa show how the quest for justice by killing criminals can lead to the insanity of trying to hold onto the power and control it.

Like any other film adaptations to a universe of preestablished comic universes - the 100 minute run time of the film allows for a brink introduction (and very likely leaves out fan favorite scenes or characters) but does a good job of introducing us to L, Light, and Ryuk.
