Review of Death Defying Acts (2007) by Izzy N — 08 Jan 2009
Saoirse Ronan walks away with the acting honours from this fictional depiction of Houdini's life. She completely leaves an awful Zeta-Jones and an inept Pearce for dead with her spot-on depiction of a child wracked by the conflict of being used by her parent whilst still loving her.
Anderson's direction is lacking in focus and the film suffers from a very uneven tone as it can't make up its mind as to whether it wants to be bawdy and funny or dark and serious. Technically there are brilliant elements on display.
The costumes and production design are top notch and the score is quite lovely but as a whole it just feels off kilter. It's not terrible but it's far from good.
