Review of Death Defying Acts (2007) by Tibor B — 06 Sep 2009
Nicely shot but dramatically dull fictional story of Harry Houdini's relationship with a poor single Edinburgh mum, who scrapes a living from a scantily clad psychic act and is attracted by a $10k offer of guessing his mothers last words.
The cast try their best, but it is the script which falls flat, its curious mix of romance, period drama, oedipal themes and the illusions of showbusiness simply never coming together. The psychological motivations behind the characters are all over the place, never becoming coherent or plausible and Pearce and Zeta-Jones lack much chemistry.
