Review of Death Becomes Her (1992) by Russell B — 30 Dec 2008
Oh, Robert Zemeckis, could you do no wrong in the '80s/early '90s? Pretty well not. The special body effects are all the more unsettlingly effective for their relative crudity, Streep and Hawn have a great time being delightfully bitchy, and Bruce Willis turns in a surprisingly good comedy performance that's a world away from his action hero personae. (In particular, note his priceless response to the news that his 'dead' wife has been taken to the morgue.).
The film comes undone somewhat at the point where the two girls call time on their bitter rivalry in the name of mutual cosmetic cravings (not to mention the point where we're supposed to forget that Ernest murdered his wife, and wholeheartedly cheer him on in his escape efforts), but hey... It all makes for a wonderfully campy, creepy little farce.
