Review of Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008) by Maggie C — 14 Aug 2009
After his best friend is murdered by an ex-girlfriend, film-maker Kurt Kuenne sets out to make a final film about just who Andrew was. This film transforms into a tribute for Andrew's son, however, when it turns out his ex-girlfriend is pregnant.
As Kurt visits all the people touched by Andrew's life, little Zachary's grandparents relocate to Newfoundland where an unconscionably long extradition process with numerous horrific oversights from the court system keeps them from custody of the child.
What happens next, in the course of this documentary's development, caused me a great deal of pain to watch: Kurt so lovingly lays out four beautiful lives (Andrew's, his parents', and little Zachary's) that you cannot possibly walk away unchanged from this viewing experience.
I just... it hurts so much that a story like this had to be documented: But I'm just as... moved? thankful? that it was.
