Review of Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008) by Stacy S — 03 Apr 2010
Dear Zachary is an instance of substance over style. A documentary following a very disturbing, extremely emotional journey, the film has a very low-budget feel. It doesn't really detract from the film in any way, other than making it feel sort of cheap.
When the subject matter is so gripping and unbelievable (yet true), though, it really doesn't matter. The film transforms throughout as the focus shifts from a tribute to a lost friend, to a letter to his son, to a final, shocking transformation that I won't ruin here.
It's a beautiful dedication to a life cut short, and the audience is truly fortunate to get a glimpse of the best (and worst) of humanity.
