Review of Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008) by Omar G — 30 May 2012
No film in recent memory that I have seen (and believe me when I say, I have watched quite a few in my lifetime) has left such a deep and disturbing scar in my psyche as Mr. Kuenne's documentary "Dear Zachary". Almost 24 hours after I've seen it, I am still thinking about it while I blog here. I went to sleep yesterday, and I barely went to sleep thinking about it. And chances are, I will go to sleep tonight still terrified and thinking about it.
The cinematography, the editing and the story telling is a work of genius, because Mr. Kuenne depicts not one, but two movies inside one single documentary: a love letter to his childhood friend and a horrific and unimaginable true murder story, both wrapped up in a big bow that claims how flawed and sloppy is the justice system of a certain country is.
I'm not one that believes in "misery loves company", but I have to cry out loud: YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS FILM!!!!! Not to share the feeling this film left inside me, but because it is an unforgettable slice of life and it is almost incredible this things happen. Highly recommended!
