Review of Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008) by Lewis E — 11 May 2014
I'm starting to think documentaries is quite possibly the most underrated genre of all time. Let's be honest, it's hard for other films to recreate that same reaction as when an audience knows the shocking events they're witnessing on screen is a true story.
All the emotion is intensified and this is indeed the case here when you reach the sad twist towards the end. It was recommended that I go into this blind and I think most will also benefit from this approach seeing as most of the intrigue comes from the unfamiliarity with the case.
The director is guilty of going unnecessarily rapid at times which means it is hard to absorb information but all the comedic touches and disturbing voice recordings gives this documentary its own personality.
Definitely gets my seal of approval.
