Review of Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008) by Richard B — 06 May 2015
One of my best friends told me that this documentary was great 5-6 years ago, but I didn't get around to watching until I recently found that it was on Netflix. I liked Dear Zachary quite a bit, but didn't think it was too amazing or even that shocking.
One major reason I feel is that true crime documentaries (The Jinx, The Impostor) and podcasts (Serial, Criminal) seem to be very in now and some of these were better. I felt like Dear Zachary felt like a personal/home-made episode of Dateline.
I heard how great the twists were in this film and I admit I didn't see one major one coming, I was after seeing The Jinx and listening to Serial, I've expected major twists. Dear Zachary was a very well made, heartfelt documentary and I really did like the ending and I was moved by it.
Overall a solid documentary, but I liked The Jinx and Serial better in my opinion.
