Review of Dear White People (2014) by Isaac M — 14 Nov 2014
The echoes of Spike Lee (DO THE RIGHT THING in particular, but also BAMBOOZLED) feel deliberate, and, while DEAR WHITE PEOPLE can't approach Lee's best work in terms of style (the film looks like a student film most of the time, which is a disappointment, but also somehow refreshing), Justin Simien's script offers a similarly sly, incisive commentary on contemporary racial politics in America, updating things for the Obama age.
DEAR WHITE PEOPLE does so many things so well, you can't help but wish it did them all a little better, which is more a reflection on its electrifying ambition than on its lack of accomplishment.
