Review of Dear White People (2014) by Steven K — 03 Feb 2015
This movie deals with race and racial stereotypes and dares to question whether or not America is, as many would like to think, over the whole issue simply because we have a black President and because a lot of white kids (rather lamely quite often) emulate all things black in popular culture.
It's a complex subject to take on, but it does of an admirable job of lampooning and throwing barbs at some white peoples' seeming desperation to enact the behavior and lingo of black culture.
For every Eminem, there are hundreds of white dudes wearing drooping pants and caps on backwards and trying to talk like Tupak Shakur. This movie could ignite a lot of debate and a lot of conversations but as cinema it's probably too incendiary for those of any race who would rather not deal with a still controversial and troubling subject; to put it another way, if I may in all irony, you gotta be down with it ('cause it's not a lazy-brain movie and it's sharp as a razor).
