Review of Dear White People (2014) by L Troy A — 02 Mar 2015
Probably made the biggest impression of any movie over the last ten years. Though _Twelve Years a Slave_ and _The Butler_ are more comfortable for White people like me, this movie made me think - which may be why it will not win mainstream awards and is preferred by more critics than viewers.
Another sign of the artfulness of this, movie - the actions of the main characters can be viewed from more than one vantage point simultaneously, and the whole movie still hangs together from beginning to end.
To reverse how most multiple-perspective films work today, as we consider various viewpoints, we are less sure of motivation and forethought, rather than finding resolution. While unmasking the way racism and classism live and thrive on U.
S. campuses today, the director consistently shows the struggle, pathos, and victory of the human condition. I love this movie.
