Review of Dear Wendy (2005) by Tracy — 22 Sep 2005
Ignore the critics. A well-made and original film that locates the humanity in the gun culture without ever letting us of the hook for starting more trouble than we solve by letting the fear fixate us on "protection".
It is a fable, in the sense that it takes place in a contained universe with it's own rules, but that universe is pretty recognizable to anyone who grew up in a small town. Van Trier may be a foreigner, but he gets the fears and hurts and myths that we grapple with, and how they can play out in a kind of societal madness that leads to classical tragedy.
Highly recommended.
