Review of Dean Spanley (2008) by Ethan T — 05 Feb 2009
An undiscovered gem of a movie, this UK-NZ co-production has an excellent cast (Peter O'Toole, Sam Neill, Jeremy Northam, Bryan Brown) and a deftly-told whimsical story of a churchman who regresses to his past life as a spaniel when plied with top-class Tokay.
It's not played for cheap laughs; rather, it's a energetic re-shaping of the classic Scrooge tale with generous but clever humour. O'Toole is particularly excellent as the curmudgeonly Fisk Senior.
Definitely one to take your parents or grandparents to see.
