Review of Deadpool (2016) by Edwin P — 11 Aug 2016
Yes, I do get the anti-superhero vibe, the crass language and the violence. It is too bad that a lot of these have already been done before in "Kick-Ass". (As a frame of reference, I've reposted that review.) "Deadpool" has a few things going for it - its quirky opening credits and one-liners. But after a while, Ryan Reynolds's unyielding pertinacity of talking back to the camera becomes repetitious and is no longer funny.
"Kick-Ass" was the first to subvert the superhero film formula. It is too bad that "Deadpool" comes six years later trying to replicate that same formula that made "Kick-Ass" succeed while adding very little to stand out on its own.
