Review of Deadpool (2016) by Lenny R — 17 Oct 2016
Apologies to Bryan Singer and Matthew Vaughn, but this just might be the best X-Men movie ever made (Ratner can suck it). Well, the most purely entertaining, at least. It's hilarious, action-packed, and pretty moving at times - just all kinds of great.
This is what Ryan Reynolds was born to do, and he does it superbly. Amazing feature debut for Tim Miller - the way he directs action scenes is wonderfully fluid and smooth, while managing to convey an appropriate sense of speed and chaos (take note, Greengrass-alikes), and, perhaps more importantly, fun.
Baccarin is as great as ever. Carano is always good value, and the scene in which she fights the fully-CGI Colossus is brilliant. Miller is hilarious as usual. Hildebrand shows a lot of promise. I'm an '80s-'90s kid, so I LOVE the soundtrack.
Just when it felt like superheroes were becoming old hat, this gives the genre the rejuvenation it needed. Everyone involved deserves a completely unironic high five.
