Review of Deadpool (2016) by Cameron H — 10 Nov 2016
Think of Deadpool as The Cabin in the Woods for superhero movies: not a game changer, but a loving mockery of its genre's many tropes. There is a key difference between the two: Joss Whedon committed fully to the mockery, even in its most genuinely enjoyable moments.
Revenge is still revenge, romance is still romance, and most unfortunately, action is still action. Tim Miller, bless his heart, does his best to lighten the mood in the most dramatic of moments, and this amounts to about the same zaniness as Guardians of the Galaxy, only with a decidedly dangerous antihero.
Ryan Reynolds is especially funny, bringing the fourth wall-breaking antics of Deadpool to cinematic life. I have faith in the franchise. Now that the origin story is over, with a protagonist who cares not for universal morals, I foresee an even better sequel.
What the fuck does Deadpool have to be conflicted about?
