Review of Deadpool (2016) by Jason M — 14 Aug 2016
Firstly, I am not a big fan of the modern "superhero" films that younger audiences are goo-goo ga-ga over. The critique is about the film overall and nothing biased against the genre. Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool character is a true standout and drives the film. This feature separates this film from over 90% of the other superhero movies. His unique portrayal of a crass, foul-mouthed, over-sexed asshole with super abilities has to my knowledge, never before been portrayed on film.
However, the final 3rd moves too fast trying to close up the runaway plot. The slugfest in the end of super heroes and villains is just plain silly, but this is exactly what audiences are paying big bucks for, so they are getting what they want. Deadpool's termination of the antagonist at the end is remarkably silly given the super powers this person possesses. Reynolds' acting cannot hold up the manufactured and predictable plot and thus it falls into a heap of rubble just as it does on the screen at the end of the film.
I predict a Deadpool 2, 3, 4...
