Review of Deadpool (2016) by Jacob W — 10 Nov 2016
Deadpool was a violent, comedic thrill ride. The way the writers laid out the story by switching scenes from past to present was a cool concept. Nobody's better at telling Deadpool's story than Deadpool himself! The visuals in this movie were also quite well done. The action made Deadpool shine by fitting his violent, over-the-top context. However, as much as I enjoyed this movie, I do believe it was quite overrated. Now, were millions of Marvel fans waiting for this movie? Yes and it's awesome that we got it, but there were some things in this movie that made me quite uncomfortable. Probably the key example is all of the scenes with sexual content and nudity. I mean, I understand they were trying to establish a Deadpool-esque love story for Wade Wilson, but I don't think that the sex/nudity was necessary at all. Also, as much I loved the action, I thought it was a bit too much for me. And that's not because I don't like violence. Some of my all-time favorite movies are Braveheart and The Patriot. Each of those movies are quite violent. However, the violence has a certain realism to it that makes it fit within the context of the film (Mel Gibson was great at that). That's where I think Deadpool fell short. Now, I understand that Deadpool is the way he is and my personal tastes aren't going to change that. However, the first Deadpool I was introduced to was the Deadpool in the video game Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. In that game, he was funny, edgy, and incredibly entertaining without compromising anyone's personal tastes. I just wish that people could accept that Deadpool rather than the one we saw on screen, but that's just a personal taste sorta thing.
Overall, Deadpool was a well-written movie that had me holding my gut at certain parts out of laughter. Good comedy, but it was a bit over-the-top for me. I wouldn't recommend it to many others, but that's just because this movie is pretty selective for it's audience, which is fine! People have been waiting long for this, and it's finally here.
