Review of Deadpool 2 (2018) by Jess W — 26 May 2018
Deadpool 2 took everything that wasn't so good about the first movie and improved the shit out of it. I don't remember ever laughing this much in a movie. It was offensive, gory, and hilarious as expected.
I was surprised at how good the acting was. Obviously, Deadpool is no Oscar movie, but the actors all brought their A-Game for whatever character they were playing. Ryan Reynolds was good as Deadpool (again), Josh Brolin was awesome as Cable, it was really fun seeing Deadpool and Cable on screen together, especially since Cable's serious attitude totally opposes Wade's lightheartedness about everything (not including the events that occur at the start), and every other actor each added something to the movie.
The few problems I had were some special effects issues. There was a scene where Zazie Beetz's Domino jumps into a road and starts to run through it with a bunch of cars driving and crashing around her.
They looked very off and extremely fake. And during the big Colossus vs. (Spoiler, I guess) fight scene, it looked silly. The editing was, for the most part, acceptable aside from a few choppy and confusing scenes where it was hard to tell what was going on.
For example, T.J. Miller's Weasel gets kidnapped by Cable about halfway through the film. It showed Cable hiding around a corner waiting for Weasel to turn. This shot lasted onscreen for a couple of frames before cutting to another scene.
When that cut back to Cable and Weasel, Weasel was tied to a chair and cable wait holding a gun. Upon first viewing, I totally missed that. So due to the occasional choppy editing, important moments could be missed, literally in the blink of an eye.
But, this movie is the most fun I've had at the theater in such a long time. All the jokes were funnier than the ones in the first movie, they totally improved on the villain (who was stupidly weak in the first installment) and made him very compelling and capable of being felt for, despite how ruthless and evil he was (or would be in the future), and on top of everything, there was a hilarious soundtrack, getting songs titled "Holy Shit Balls" playing over fight scenes.
The action was a lot more entertaining this time around, it was a lot more colorful too. But most importantly, Deadpool never got annoying like he did in the first movie. I don't know why but Deadpool just really got on my nerves in his 2016 debut movie.
But like I said, everything's improved and it makes for a freaking amazing movie. Very strong 8/10.
