Review of Deadpool 2 (2018) by Dylan N — 20 May 2018
'Superhero fatigue' is less of a thing than 'Superhero fatigue fatigue,' based on this summer's box office numbers. The genre isn't going away any time soon. I have a large appetite for the stuff, so I hope this 'golden age' lasts for a long time. The closest I've come to that 'superhero fatigue' feeling came when I exited 'Avengers: Age of Ultron.' "That was fine," I remember saying. "It just seemed like an arc of a monthly superhero comic." A good arc (that film holds up well) but just another chapter in a big-budget soap opera.
Deadpool 2 felt like a story arc of a monthly superhero book. This time, I mean that in the best sense possible. You see, the insane, whiplash-inducing tone of this picture is deeply rooted in the Deadpool source material. Those books aren't - and can't be - as explicit in their humor, but there is a ribald streak there, along with the fourth-wall-breaking, the time travel, the ultra-violence. This film strikes that tone just as well as it's predecessor. The fun part, for me, was to see that sensibility clash more fully with the larger X-Men universe, replete with it's melodramatic fists-to-heaven pathos. Honestly, the boilerplate tearjerker beats do manage to jerk tears. This movie is a super-hero confection, for sure - but it's one of those 'mega super sour i-dare-you-to-suck-on-it' jawbreakers.
The laughs and the action ought to satisfy general audiences (NOT children - come ON, people at my screening. HARD R.) - but the extra layer of love I feel for this thing might be due to my affinity for the X-Men lore. That's not a bad thing - I'm just saying that your mileage may vary.
