Review of Deadpool 2 (2018) by Chris K — 29 May 2018
There's nothing quite like Deadpool in the modern superhero genre, and I have to say I enjoyed this full-frontal assault just as much as the original. D2 does feel a little overly long (where I felt the original was a little short) but it nevertheless captures a weird dynamic of crass humor and positive messaging.
Ryan Reynolds reprises his role as Deadpool, and continues to be a perfect fit for the katana-wielding antihero. There's so much meta-humor and goofiness that there's almost a gag every scene, or sometimes multiple piling up on each other, but the nice thing is that the humor remains relatively fresh.
The post credits sequence is particularly hilarious! A few jokes didn't really hit me as much as others in the audience, though. Josh Brolin as Cable is excellent, a really great addition to the cast, and so is Zazie Beetz as the comedically lucky sidekick.
In fact, I felt the cast overall simply had more personality and character as compared to the first, so that's a positive improvement. Deadpool isn't necessarily a giant step up from the original, but more par for the course.
It feels kind-of like a Part 2 rather than a true sequel. That being said it's shocking, surprising, and over-the-top in the all the right ways.
