Review of Deadpool 2 (2018) by Tiberio S — 02 Jun 2018
It's the same schtick as the last one - fourth-wall cracking audience winks - with new characters and a little deeper into X-Men mythos. My problem here is the poor character writing, which is where Ryan Reynolds may have wanted to step away and hire a professional. It felt like all the dialogue was spoken by one character - Ryan Reynolds himself. I enjoy Deadpool's jokes, but why does every other character have to talk like him? Most out of place was Firefist's antics - the audience went silent when he did his little rope-pulling trick, which was just so far out of the character and moment that I had flashbacks of Paul Feig's Ghostbusters.
Improved from the last film are more memorable villains, one of which I will not spoil, but who is an X-Men favorite. Firefist and the Headmaster are both villains, but at each other's throat. The Headmaster is brief, but that he's played by Eddie Marsan breathes layers of life into the character that the first Deadpool - who was that guy again? - was sorely missing.
Some may be disappointed, but perhaps the boldest choice of any superhero film was made shortly after an airborne attack to rescue another character held hostage in a moving truck. Here come the newly assembled parachuting X-Force, and I won't say what happens next, but my head nearly fell off laughing so hard.
So yeah, there's some things to enjoy here, there's other things that leave a sore spot, but all-in-all it's a fun movie, not much more.
