Review of Deadgirl (2008) by Lacey D — 17 Oct 2009
To start off, despite all criticism, having been pretty fluent in horror and disturbing cinema in general, this movie is very original. My good review and liking of Deadgirl is mostly based on this. I haven't really seen this type of plotline done before, and I found it unique in a movie with a dead-alive girl strapped to a table that the focus is still turned more to interpersonal relationships than an explanation. This could be disappointing for those who want all questions answered, because they won't be, it's not the point of the movie to answer them. I thought it was very well written, they used to most insane character (JT) to almost poke at the holes in their own story in some of his monologues. If you're looking for shock value, this isn't terribly shocking, and isn't made to be, it's one of those movies that you have to take for what it is, and what it's doing, and drop your own expectations aside because the directors damn well were not trying to fulfill them.
As for the cons, there was a lot of typical horror-movie-esque convenience, you know, like, why the fuck would a high school student brag to boys beating him up about a hot dead girl he's fucking in an old asylum? I don't hold it against the movie too much, though, because in any film where circumstances are obviously impossible (girls dead, but alive, but dead?) you can't expect everything to be exactly realistic, after all, the movie's not french. The transitions were shaky, but really, they'd have to be, you can't put much time into making everything unravel logically when the synopsis requires teenage boys thoughtlessly gung-ho on necrophilia.
