Review of Dead Snow (2009) by Will B — 27 Sep 2010
The idea of nazi zombies is utterly stupid, but wonderfully intriguing. I'll admit it, the concept had me hooked and eager to see it. Despite looking ultra-low budget, the first 30 minutes of Dead Snow is actually quite good.
It's clever, funny, and unique given the fact that the group of teenagers in the film are actually likable (compared to a group of sex-craved assholes typically found in other horror films). But when the nazi zombies show up (aka the reason why you watched the movie in the first place), all goes south.
The zombies are too goofy to take seriously, yet too drab to laugh at. The film has a serious tonal dilemma because it doesn't know what kind of film it wants to be. I love Sam Raimi and the cheesy action in his movies, and I feel like Dead Snow tried to mimic his style.
But it's executed cheaply and ultimately fails in the end.
