Review of Dead Snow (2009) by Archibald T — 22 Mar 2011
The film begins with one of my favorite classical music pieces: In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg. A woman is being chased during what is the opening prologue. It's a traditional chase where she then becomes devoured by this very group who is chasing her.
We're then introduced to our characters. It's one of those typical horror character intro's. We're first intro-ed with the guys then the girls. They're heading to a cabin in a snowy mountain area. They play twister, snow fight, drink beer and get visited by an old man who just so happens to be wondering the snowy mountain side.
He's come to tell them the history of the cabin for which they stay. A Nazi Colonel and his soldiers were chased out of the area by 3,000 of it's citizens who had enough of all the Nazi bullshit. They were robbing the people of their goods and due to the rage of the citizens because of this they banded together to kill these Nazis.
However, Colonel Herzog and his men escaped to the mountains with the goods they stole. The citizens followed their tracks until they couldn't anymore. "In these exact mountains," the old man says "Is where they (Nazis) froze to death." He goes on to tell them that there is an evil presence in the area. That sucks.
Much of the film lives in it's cliche horror build up. The old man is found dead in his tent, the characters are not interesting and are typical slasher bait. Fresh bait, but bait at best. Say that several times. Also there are lots and lots of references to horror movies. Even the characters quote films from Indiana Jones to Terminator.
One of the characters discovers a box of "Fortune and Glory" aka a box of treasure which must be the motif for the Nazi's surprise for one character in the outhouse. From that point is where the fun begins.
It's a gory zombie flick in that 2nd to 3rd act and the concept of Nazi Zombies is hilarious if at times creepy.
