Review of Dead Snow (2009) by David L — 11 Mar 2013
This didn't take itself seriously enough to be good, but it wasn't funny enough to be considered entertaining either. It all centres around a group of 8 medical students who are on a winter break in the mountains, but are haunted by the existence of German Nazi zombies still living in the area.
One by one, they all get attacked and start dropping like flies in the most gruesomely unrealistic of ways. It starts off like a genuine thriller but the further we progress, the more blood that gets spilt and the more sausage like intestines we see.
There's only so many times you can see people being impaled on trees by their own bowels, before it just gets daft. The fact that people were then clambering onto those innards as a form of rope took it beyond belief.
We then went on to see bodies being ripped literally in half, heads being pulled apart by the eye sockets, and attempts at self amputation of one's arm. The amount of plasticine and ketchup that must have been used would have taken up 99% of the entire films budget I would expect.
I genuinely wasn't anticipating a comedy, but I guess I should have read the label first. To then not be delivered with anything rib tickling just compounded the misery. Some of the best attempts at laughter actually came from the German subtitles - I'm not sure whether it was poor dubbing or very poor acting that was hired, but something that probably wasn't intent on providing amusement, actually did.
This is certainly nothing to recommend but it would probably make a decent watch if it came on late at night, and you were half Intoxicated at the time - otherwise, I'd suggest giving it a miss!
