Review of Dead Silence (2007) by Alex P — 04 Oct 2014
Wow. I'm surprised at the percentage here. But I guess that's because I saw the Unrated version. But seeing that this is from the same writer/director as the Saw franchise, I will just put out here, THIS IS HOW YOU DO A SCARY MOVIE! It didn't need a lot of sex/nudity to be scary, like what most horror films do these days.
It did not give us the usual jump scares we have gotten so used to. Rather, the entire movie is this mystery to solve, which makes it all the more fun to watch. The dolls are a frightening touch, as is the concept of human dolls.
The twist ending was the most interesting. Now if I did have one problem with the film, it was the usual asshole detective who is skeptical and, no matter what, wants to persecute the protagonist because he/she can't think outside of the box to solve the case.
Overall, Dead Silence was a very entertaining watch. It carries a very eerie and off-putting feeling throughout, especially through the cinematography and the lack of intense colors in every frame. Although, the use of CGI in some parts does take away from the moment.
By the way, guys, nice Jigsaw cameo. I definitely recommend this film. I haven't seen the original that was released in theaters, but the Unrated version isn't bad either.
