Review of Dead Silence (2007) by Evan Q — 10 Apr 2011
"Dead Silence" is a good ghost story, that's kept from greatness by a handful of nagging flaws--not the least of which is an ending which raises more questions than it answers, and not in a good way.
(Admittedly, the alternate ending does work a little better.) The rest are some nagging gaps in logic, a few over-stylized scenes, and some lackluster CGI. It's a shame, because these flaws mar an otherwise creative and interesting story, that manages to be decently creepy in parts.
Still, there are far worse horror movies out there, especially in the ghost story genre. "Dead Silence" could have so easily fallen into the territory of pure, unbridled cheesiness, but manages to avoid that for the most part--a feat which it should be commended for, if nothing else.
If you're willing to forgive its flaws, you'll find a movie that's better than its premise should allow.
