Review of Dead Silence (1991) by Brian C — 29 Nov 2012
"Beware the stare of mary shaw.
She had no children, only dolls.
And if you see her in your dreams.
Make sure you never ever scream.
Or she'll rip your tongue out.
At the seams".
James Wan (the "Saw" films) creates a genuinely creepy little chiller with this old- fashioned ghost story of a curse that plagues the descendants of a small New England town.
"Dead Silence" is a stylish, old-school modern gothic horror thriller with fair amounts of mystery & suspense plus a good story, atmosphere and a few jump out of your seat moments and one of the best twist endings I've seen in a long while in a horror film.
The effects and make-up used in bringing the ghostly ventriloquist, Mary Shaw, and her dolls to life on screen are well done and effectively spooky. And Judith Shaw as the ghostly Mary Shaw is very creepy in her performance.
