Review of Dead Silence (1991) by Ryan P — 22 Sep 2014
Carried a lot of potential to be one of the scariest films ever made, but the ventriloquist dolls are oddly under-used and we're left with dull characters and so-so scares. James Wan is brilliant at creating a creepy atmosphere and his skills behind the camera are some of the best in the horror scene, but his cast ultimately lets him down.
The story is very unsettling and there are many tense moments offered, but the real thrills don't come until the terrifying climax and that's the part you should wait for. The twist is hinted at heavily, but I'm still not 100% convinced by it's execution and plausibility; as neat as it is.
With a more energetic cast and less mystery, more horror, this could've really been something!
