Review of Dead Ringers (1988) by Conner R — 01 Dec 2009
This, I think, is one of David Cronenbergs finest movies. Up until this point, he was still known as a visceral, slanted, horror movie type of director. Before this we got The Fly, Videodome, The Dead Zone, & Scanners. His more recent fare, Eastern Promises & A History of Violence are considered a more palattable type of movie when compared to his earlier work.
Dead Ringers is the exception. Not a horror movie, but disturbing nonetheless. Jermemy Irons plays twin gynecologists. No one can tell them apart. Elliot is the more confident of the two. While Beverly is shy, reserved, & vulnerable.
The way their lives play out is that Elliot, the more confidant, beds women at his leisure. Gets into relationships and once he gets tired of the woman, he sends her to his brother, while the woman is none the wiser.
When we meet up with the brothers in modern day Canada, it is Beverly who falls in love. This is where all the problems arise.
Beverly falls in love with an actress, played by Genevieve Bujold. She has an interesting, and rare condition, that makes her appealing to both brothers.
It is an edgy, dark, dangerous movie. The brothers sometimes act like each other to fool other people, but begin to realize, they don't know who they are without the other.
If you are a fan of David Cronenbergs more recent movies, or just want to watch a movie you have to invest a little time into, this is worth a look.
