Review of Dead Ringers (1988) by Jacob R — 21 Jun 2007
One introvert, one extrovert, both successful gynecologists, the twin represented in this film is archetypal (in a sense that their relationship concords with the Winnebago Twin myth I've read in Carl Jung's Man and Symbolisms).
The extrovert one would seduce attractive women, and the introvert one would later guise himself as his brother for what's left. The concept is great, but it felt unnecessary that Cronenberg had to go out with the body-genre horror style in the end.
I thought the film could use a little more sanity--I just want Cronenberg to end things without resorting to human degradation for once. The film seems like an academic, experimental piece, which isn't bad but a little unexpected.
Kudos to Jeremy Irons for his superb performance.
