Review of Dead Ringers (1988) by Juha R — 31 Jul 2007
Possibly Cronenberg's best film and Irons' best acting performance. The use of color and subdued, yet stylized, production design serve to create an other-worldly sensibility, the shared reality of the Mantle brothers.
Especially evocative are the scenes in their operating room, wearing scrubs that are vaguely reminiscent of priestly robes. Red, of course. There's the story too, a brilliant tale of twins and their love for each other, their shared descent into madness.
Cronenberg manages to explore sex and violence w/o his more blatant imagery. It's a very effective film, though it might be too "weird" for some.
