Review of Dead Ringers (1988) by James M — 15 Jun 2009
Another great idea from Cronenberg that he doesnâ??t really develop into anything as great as the original thought was. Twin gynecologists who share lovers has oodles of room for giving us a sinister contemporary horror and maybe itâ??s in Cronenbergâ??s defence that he avoids burrowing into female minds with a potential shocker for the ages.
What I think more likely has happened that like many of his other films heâ??s got a terrific idea which he canâ??t decide what to do with it. Another film of his that has a same feeling of being properly explored was Existenz which abandoned itâ??s complexity for a glue on ending.
Jeremy Irons does pretty well handling both roles and for the first half of the film his performance is enthralling as he flits between socially confident brother to nerd brother. Sadly, as the film hits the grittier and darker aspects of the story, Irons isnâ??t really able to deliver as well.
I enjoyed the way the film switches its focus, however that approach has the side effect of making the film a bit indecisive.
