Review of Dead Ringers (1988) by Scott M — 05 Oct 2011
A disturbing look at identity about two twin gynecologists who use one another to live out their fantasies. Cronenberg definitely has some body horror elements in here, but this film manages to delve just as deeply into the characters' psychology without nearly as much of the gross imagery (although there is some).
Irons is great in the dual leading role, but the film isn't really about character, and focuses more on form and tone. Cronenberg explores the notion individuality and whether it is more than skin deep, and the results are certainly mind-bending.
The cold sterility of the film kept me at arm's length throughout, but I certainly admired the effort.
