Cronenberg's most twisted masterpiece. Howard Shore's score tells us what the heart of the picture is all about: a tragic love story between two Brothers. When was the last time you can recall a movie having twins as the protagonist? (Without the comedy.
) Not to mention, they are gynecologists. Has this ever happened? Huge points for originality. Irons is outstanding and the effects are remarkable for the 80s. This was a major departure for Cronenberg.
He had already established himself as a horror filmmaker and then he re-staked his claim as his own artist. As Dylan would say, he went electric. He pulled a Kid A. Luckily his fans went along with him and suddenly he entered a whole new class of auteurs.
Often selected amongst the finest Canadian films ever made, Dead Ringers remains a powerful, tragic and moving story. Plus, the opening credits are gorgeous.
