Review of Dead Ringers (1988) by T C — 19 Dec 2007
Ok, I really don't get the fuss about this one.
Yes, it has its moments, yes, Jeremy Irons pulls off not one, but two incredible performances, yes, the story is fairly interesting (though not quite disturbing, as some tend to say) , and yes, the score is also good.
But what else?
Nothing.
Now, here's what may have had something to do with this opinion of mine:
- I'm not really a Cronenberg fan, apart from The Fly and the Dead Zone;.
- The movie is definitely longer than it should ("Oh no, but you're missing the point! That's exactly what was needed in order to thoroughly explore the symbolic aspects and meaning of it, specially the spiral chain of harmful events and the symbiotic relationship there was between the tw..." = blah blah, fucking blah);.
- I was expecting a lot of things from this movie.
But I sure didn't expect a pure drama.
Because that's what it really is.
Maybe if I was expecting it, I'd probably think of Dead Ringers differently now.
Guess I'll never know.
