Review of Dead or Alive: Final (2002) by Chris W — 26 May 2008
Perhaps watching the final DOA film after being so impressed with DOA2 was a bad decision. DOA: Final is all kinds of absurd, this time with Takeuchi as a corrupt cop and Aikawa as a socially awkward combat cyborg.
Yes Miike takes these characters to a futuristic Japan where childbirth is prohibited and Chinese immigrants fight for freedom, but it just feels like he is pushing it. It's definitely the best looking of the three, and some of the action scenes are great, but I really didn't need to see Takeuchi and Aikawa end their feud with a sonic boom that turns them into a gigantic robotic dildo.
Given that it's Miike, though, I shouldn't be as surprised as I was.
