Review of Dead Man's Shoes (2004) by Hattie B — 04 Sep 2008
This is England was my introduction to Shane Meadows, ever since then I've been wanting to see Dead Man's Shoes.
I'm happy to report that it doesn't disappoint! The movie is full of original characters that are both serious and comical at the same time, a combination that many films have tried to achieve but few have succeeded as well as this one. The acting and directing is first class. The use of music is great too, the excellent and haunting folk songs anticipate the scenes and are pretty much glued to the storytelling, but still manage to feel natural and never tacked on.
When it comes to dark humour, surreal yet authentic atmosphere combined with unforgiving action, for me, this is up there with the best and delivered with impeccable style!
Shane Meadows FTMFW - strong recommendation!
