Review of Dead Man's Shoes (2004) by Doug B — 16 Sep 2009
What is essentially a slasher film defies the standard, fusing gritty realism with surreal elements and exploratory flashbacks, the notion of genre is intoxicatingly remixed by Meadows. The film takes the emotional reality of the killer and shows you it from his point of view, instead of absurd zombies or haloween-esque villains it feels more emotionally complex, dependant on the rural, day-to-day setting, the feeling of normality is so well established that the savage moments hit to home with more authenticity than anyone could imagine.
It's brutal and shocking, it's Shane Meadows.
