Review of Dead Man's Shoes (2004) by Bob M — 18 Feb 2010
Revenge movies can be entertaining. But the rationale for the revenge must be compelling since this storyline has been used so many times that I don't want to feel used. The great ones, the original Death Wish and the wonderful In The Bedroom - for example, set up a scenario that drags you in and compels you to root for the protagonist to get his or her justice.
Dead Man's Shoes does just that. It is hard not to pull for the guy, as demented as he seems, to get even for the abuse piled on his mentally challenged brother at the hands of a group of local punks.
And Considine does a great job of being his brother's avenger. And he does get his revenge. But I liked the story even more because the ending is not Hollywood as we watch him express the pain that compels him to avenge his brother's abuse.
Other than a music score I didn't care for, this movie was compelling to watch. I also learned that if you ever want to mess with someone, don't pick on the guy who's brother is the equivalent of a Navy Seal.
Not a very shrewd move, not a very shrewd move at all.......
