Review of Dead Man's Shoes (2004) by Andy K — 23 Jun 2012
Whilst I am familiar with the work of Shane Meadows I've never actually seen any of his work, so this is an interesting introduction into his cinematic world for me. I don't really know how to describe my feelings regarding this film, I found the style at times to be rather odd, this may be a feature but it felt like a made for TV movie mostly I feel because of the varying degrees of acting styles on show.
The central theme of revenge is nothing new to cinema but I found the way in which it was handled most interesting, Considine never really draws any sympathy from the viewer even though his actions are justified and oddly I found that I had more sympathy for his victims, though one moment towards the end of the film had me reeling.
It knocked me for six as I was completely blindsided and I didn't see it coming. I would recommend this film but with caution to the casual viewer as it is quite uncompromising at times, I look forward to checking out further works from Meadows.
