Review of Dead Man Walking (1995) by Ale — 11 Feb 2009
It's ironic that one of the themes of this film is redemption, given that the movie had to redeem itself (in my opinion) after a fairly weak first half--the acting, the script, the musical cues, etc.
seemed to be slightly off, and certainly weren't wholly naturalistic, which is what was called for. Fortunately the second half really made up for it, and we begin to see Oscar-caliber work from Penn and Sarandon.
This film does a fine job balancing the points of view, evidenced by the fact that while certain characters begin speaking out against the death penalty, the audience is shown flashbacks of the original crimes.
Too many times the original victims are glossed over in a story like this, but this story will likely challenge viewpoints on both sides of the capital punishment issue.
