Review of Dead Man Walking (1995) by Peter L — 26 Feb 2009
This is one of the more powerful movies that I have ever seen. It had a really powerful script, and the direction was great, but what made the movie really incredible were the emotionally devastating performances.
I feel like some of the most incredible things about this movie are it's unbiased feel. Susan Sarandon plays a nun, who is deeply religious, and she never falters in that. She is a religous woman, but what impressed me was how she didn't try and force her religous beliefs on anyone.
She was not a judgemental woman at all, and that made her devout religous atitude toward life even more powerful. Sean Penn played a man who we feel so conflicted about, and he did it perfectly as always.
I think that was one of the most remarkable things about this movie. It presented alot of controversial issues, and alot of things to be conflicted about, and it let you be conflicted about them. It didn't ultimately swing one way, and it really provoked alot of thought.
That is something that is so rare in a movie...
